so a thing about adam that pisses me off aside from the entire premise is that like, i was a fucked up gender-ambiguous person hanging out with trans dudes and dykes and like, desperately wishing i could have been a trans dude, because transmasculinity was cool and subversive and being a trans woman was totally outside the realm of possibility for me for a long time. and i’m pretty sure that’s a real experience that a lot of other people share and that speaks a lot to the ways that trans women internalize so much fucked up shit, but instead we get this useless book by a cis author about a cis dude pretending to be a trans guy and what the fuck

i think one of the reasons adam fails as a novel is that the trans dyke character is presented as just welcome in the hip queer scene as the trans guy characters, with her trans womanhood presented as a non-issue. (i remember her as the only trans woman character aside from julia serano’s cameo? definitely the only trans woman character of significance in the novel.) i find it hard to accept that this sadist trans dyke who acts extremely assertive is considered uber cool in the trans new york scene and no one in this novel talks shit about her sadism and assertiveness. or is weird about her presence at a women and trans only sex party. that’s a really hard pill to swallow, especially since the novel proposes to satirize trans masculinity. you’d think that showing up the trans guy characters in the novel for the way their scene treats trans women would be a great opportunity for satire, but instead we just get a series of scenes in which they mourn the murder of a trans woman. and then julia serano showing up.

haven’t read the book, but this is all 1000% relevant. pinebark's comment about wanting to embody transmasculinity because embodying transfemininity feels unfeasible is on fucking point.

Enforcement Officials Beat & Kidnap a 12-yo Black Girl in Front of her Residence, Claiming She Was a Prostitute
"When her mother and father came outside after hearing her cries for help she was desperately holding a tree with one arm while plainclothes officers were beating her in the head, neck and throat.
Dymond Milburn, now 20-years-old, was an honor student attending advanced classes at Austin Middle School, when her life would be forever scarred by Galveston police.”
None of the enforcement officials who terrorized and beat Milburn were penalized.

smh….

officers were beating her in the head, neck and throat.
they were literally trying to kill her. this is a little girl. what the fuck.

Even better:After hung jury, girl won’t be retried in police assault case (2009)http://m.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/After-hung-jury-girl-won-t-be-retried-in-police-1601070.php
"Five of the six jurors refused to vote to convict Milburn of felony assault, said defense attorney Anthony Griffin and Assistant District Attorney Veronique Cantrell-Avloes.
An earlier attempt to try the case also ended in a mistrial after a witness made an improper statement in front of the jury.”
They tried to beat a young girl’s head in, and then charged her with felony assault on one of the officers. And there was at least one asshole juror who wanted to convict her at a retrial.

So if we wanted to watch some French animation, what films would you suggest?

the Triplets of Belleville is about an elderly woman searching for her son who was kidnapped in the middle of a Tour de France race. It’s largely free of dialogue, but the sound effects and such are wonderful. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature—it lost to Finding Nemo.

A Cat in Paris is about a young girl and her cat who discover mysteries in the course of one night. It was also nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Rango.

Persepolis is based on an autobiographical graphic novel by Marjane Satrapi about her early life in Iran. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but it lost to Ratatouille.

the Illusionist is about an aging magician and an imaginative young girl who form a father/daughter relationship. It was also nominated for a Best Animation Oscar, but lost to Toy Story 3.

The Rabbi’s Cat is a story about a cat who swallows a parrot and gains the ability to speak like a human. It is set in 1920’s Algeria.

Ernest & Celestine is the adorable story about a big bear and a little mouse who forge an unlikely friendship. It was also nominated for an Oscar in Best Animated Picture, but lost to Frozen.

Kirikou and the Sorceress is a story inspired by West African folklore that tells the story of Kirikou, a boy who was born with the ability to walk and talk, who saves his people from an evil witch. The film was popular enough to spawn sequels and a stage adaptation.

A Monster in Paris is a 3D animated musical film that is reaaaaalllly loosely based on the Phantom of the Opera. It’s set in 1910 and is about, surprisingly, a monster that lives in Paris, and his love for a young singer.

The King and the Mockingbird is an 80’s film about a cruel king titled Charles V + III = VIII + VIII = XVI, who is obsessed with a young shepherdess, and whose attempts to capture the young girl are thwarted by a mockingbird whose wife the King had previously killed.

Those are probably the most famous of the feature length animated films.

But the animated short films are just as glorious. Here’s a compilation of a bunch of short films and I can link you to others as well.

Sorry for the long answer but I just really love French animation.

Reblogging over here. French animation tends to do better with diversity than Disney does, hahaha.

POLICE BRUTALITY/TERRORISM STRIKES AGAIN: Witnesses Say A Utah African-American Man Was Running Away From Police When They Shot & Murdered Him [TW: Racism, Ethnocentrism, White Privilege]
An attorney for the family of the 22-year-old black man who was fatally shot by Utah police last week says the evidence suggests he was running away—contradicting earlier reports that he had “lunged” at the police officers.
Darrien Hunt attracted police attention Wednesday morning outside Saratoga Springs when he allegedly began walking around with a samurai sword. His family later described the sword as a “harmless 3-foot souvenir sword with a rounded edge” purchased at a gift shop, the AP reports.
Hunt was reportedly shot at least four times and died on the street outside a Panda Expressrestaurant.
Police initially claimed they shot him after he “brandished the sword and lunged toward the officers with the sword,” Utah County Chief Deputy Attorney Tim Taylor told reporters.
But Hunt’s mother—and some witnesses—say otherwise.
"They killed my son because he’s black. No white boy with a little sword would they shoot while he’s running away," Susan Hunt told the Deseret Times. “Those stupid cops thought they had to murder over a toy. This is my baby. This is my family. And they ruined my family.”
According to the LA Times, there’s evidence that suggests the shooting may not have been warranted:

According to Salt Lake City attorney Randall K. Edwards, an independent autopsy conducted Saturday at the behest of Hunt’s family showed Hunt had been shot “numerous times,” none from the front.
"This is consistent with statements made by witnesses on the scene, who report that Darrien was shot to death while running away from the police," Edwards said in a statement provided to the Los Angeles Times on Sunday. "It would appear difficult, if not impossible, to reconcile these facts with the story released by the Utah County Attorney’s Office that Darrien was lunging toward the officers when he was shot. We continue to hope that a full investigation will reveal the whole truth about this tragedy."

The LA Times does note, however, that Edwards declined to identify the pathologist or provide reporters with a copy of the report.

This is an absolutely heartbreaking case of police brutality. A 22 year old black man with down syndrome was beaten by the police for the bulge in his pants. That bulge turned out to be his colostomy bag. They ripped the bag off his body. This was an unprovoked attack. No one is safe out here.

Reblogging with updated link. The old one was dead.

Remember the case of 22 year old Gilberto Powell.

From a medical perspective this is horrifying, beyond the brutality he could’ve died from infection from a leak or trauma to his stoma.
